About

Hi!  I am Sarah the Avocadodontist!

I am a mama to two young boys, an Oral Surgeon by training and an Avocado and Coffee farmer by chance!

My husband, Spot, and I moved to North County San Diego in 2019 when I received orders to Camp Pendleton.  We assumed that we would come out to California and rent and then move back east when I finished up my time in the Navy.

But as luck would have it, we stumbled on a property with no photos on Zillow, but a google search delivered a video that I couldn't stop watching!  When we came out to find a house, we stopped here last and fell in love with the house and the land!  There were already many avocado trees - some more than 50 years old! - and some citrus trees.  Since moving in, we have planted ~2000 coffee plants, additional avocado trees (now ~300 total!) and whatever other fun fruit trees we stumble upon. That is how SunshineSpot Farms came into existence!  A few months after moving here, we got married on our back patio and the rest, as they say, is history!

A little more background...

Back in 2015, upon graduation from oral surgery residency at Baylor in Dallas, Texas, I got the news that I was headed to a ship---that was deploying.  I cried. I knew that this is what I signed up for, but didn't imagine I'd go to sea straight away- I didn't even have the uniforms I needed!

The universe is funny like that, right?

Well, there are 5000 people on the ship when we are deployed and they need an oral surgeon in order to pull away from the pier- and I was their gal!  And so it went.  While deployed, we eat in common areas and mingle and chat with others on the ship- just like a little city!  This little city survives on the barter system- which is totally my jam!  I ordered a sewing machine to make pretty rack (bed) curtains and taught myself to embroider.  I even ordered a toaster oven (shhh....) and made cookies and brownies when they stop letting us take over the galley :)

One day I decided to hang up some LED strip lights (because too much grey, leads to a sad Sarah!), but they kept coming off of the wall.  At lunch, I was sitting with a group of F-18 pilots and I mentioned this unfortunate situation.  One of them said that he could bring by some aviation grade velcro to see if it would work.  I offered to make cookies and the deal was done!

That pilot, call sign "Spot", is now my husband and he calls me "Sunshine".  Hence, SunshineSpot Farms.

Fast forward!

Today we are living in "Far North County" San Diego with our two young boys.  Spot still flies for a living and I still do Oral Surgery, but now as veterans!

My favorite way to spend a day is wandering around the grove, touching the trees, listening to the birds and more often than not....fixing broken irrigation.  It's my zen and my refuge and keeps me feeling connected and grounded.

We've planted more and have gotten chickens, so I guess that means we'll stay for a while :)
